Camping on Oahu:

There are three types of campsites on Oahu: state parks, county parks, & private campgrounds.  The best state parks for camping are both on the east side: Malaekahana and Kahana Bay.  The state and county parks are in some of the most beautiful locations on the entire island.  Check out our recommendations and discussion of the pros and cons of each below.

Kahana Bay

Gorgeous bay, great hiking, with camping beside Kam. hwy.

This is one of the most beautiful bays on Oahu.  You can kayak in the ocean and river and there are many hiking trails.  It’s a great beginner’s surf spot if it’s breaking.  If you’re going to hike, get mosquito repellent and watch the weather.

Pros: Gorgeous, relatively empty beach, lots of activities nearby.

Cons:  Campsites are right next to Kamehameha highway and so it can be loud at night.  Because of the river, the water is not as clear as at other beaches.
